Set Apart ~ A Song

The word “holiness” means to be set apart, in other words truly distinct and special. I wrote the song, “Set Apart,” in response to observing some people I care about having what I would call disposable relationships. It’s painful when something held sacred by one is treated as less than precious by another.

A broader view of these lyrics is that when we make our values expendable, when we betray our own good senses to make self-destructive choices, we enter into an emptiness that risks sliding into reverencing nothing. And that disregard doesn’t just harm us, but reaches others, whether intended or not. So, let “Set Apart” remind us of the need for keeping some things holy in our lives.

He thought it made sense
But did he really think it through
That the movements of his life
Would leave empty for the proof

He tried to justify
But his rationale was weak
Like the will that he betrayed
False security

How tricky could the data be
That he could pretend not to see

Sacred; did he ever know
Jaded; is all he holds
So sad; the mistreated
Such disregard
Is by no means
Set apart

Caresses in the dark
All lined up in a row
To look him in the eye
And witness status quo

The damage had been done
No second chance to find
The freedom he evades
Stays locked up in his mind

The markings of accountable
Will always be residual

Sacred; did he ever know
Jaded; is all he holds
So sad; the mistreated
Such disregard
Is by no means
Set apart

And his full potential is now compromised
By self-serving ways and petty lies
You can clear the slate to try again
But what’s forever lost is what might have been

Sacred; did he ever know
When Jaded; is all he holds
So sad; the mistreated
Such disregard
Is by no means
Set apart
