John 11:1-45
Lazarus becomes ill and his sisters, Mary and Martha, send word to Jesus, hoping he can help. Jesus seems to delay going to them and, by the time he arrives, his dear friend has died. Both sisters express their belief that if Jesus had been there, their brother would not have died. They have faith in what Jesus could have done, and Martha even professes faith in the resurrection on the last day — what God will do in the future. They have faith in what could have been and trust in what could be, but they are not attuned to what God is doing in the present moment. Even so, Jesus acts, and the miracle awakens them to the current reality of God’s life-giving power.
Where have I limited my trust in God’s life-giving power to the past or the future, instead of today?
